Whether a Manual Wheatgrass Juicer is Better Than an Electric One Depends on Your Lifestyle
If you’re a traveler and you want to be sure you get your daily ounce or two of wheatgrass juice, you might want to consider a manual juicer.
Electric juicers such as the Kuvings Whole Slow Juicer B6000S can be heavy and awkward to pack around, plus you need an electric outlet. If you’re out camping, you might not have access to electricity.
Do You Want to Juice Mainly Greens?
The intended purpose of manual wheatgrass juicers is to juice wheatgrass and other leafy greens. Although you can juice other produce – fruits and vegetables – most reviewers state they have to run the pulp back through the juicer one or two more times to get all the juice out. That’s why they aren’t called manual juicers in general. They work best with leafy greens.
So if you want to try adding wheatgrass and other leafy vegetables to your diet in the form of juice, and want to do it by hand rather than spend a few hundred dollars on an electric juicer, you might consider one of these manual wheatgrass juicers.
First of All, Why Juice Wheatgrass? What Are the Health Benefits?
Wheatgrass has been around for a long time and used like a medicinal herb for its healing qualities. You wouldn’t think grass would be so potent, but it’s actually full of amino acids, minerals and vitamins.
It will give you an energy boost due to all the nutritional and therapeutic qualities. And you don’t need to drink a lot at a time. A couple ounces is all it takes to get the benefits of liver detoxing, colon cleansing and blood purifying due to the high concentration of chlorophyll.
With all those nutrients, your immune system can’t help but be given a boost so you will most likely experience lesscillnesses such as colds if taken on a regular basis.
It contains beta carotene, which may help prevent some cancers, helps protect against free radicals and may even help keep our brains from deteriorating over time.
Although you can purchase a shot of wheatgrass juice in juice bars, it’s usually pretty pricey and would add up if you wanted to drink it every day. Yet if you made your own juice, you would just have to purchase the seeds, potting soil and containers to grow your own wheatgrass, besides the juicer. You can find a Certified Organic Wheatgrass Growing Kit on Amazon. It has everything you need to get started growing this super food and enjoying the health benefits of wheatgrass.
Manual Wheatgrass Juicers
Because these manual juicers are very similar, I’ll review them all on one page. There are a few things they all have in common:
- Obviously, the one thing that’s true of all of these is the quiet operation. You never have to worry about a loud grinding or spinning juicer waking up anyone else in the household if you like to get up early and fix your morning juice.
- The other thing they all have in common is that these machines and much better at juicing wheatgrass and other leafy greens such as kale and spinach than they are at juicing firmer vegetables and fruits such as carrots and apples. You CAN make it happen, but it might be a little frustrating having to run the pulp back through a couple of times to get all the juice out. You would also need to cut the produce into small pieces and not try to run too much through at a time.
- And one other thing to mention is that these are all masticating type juicing machines even though you’ll be cranking the juice out by hand. This means you’ll get more nutrition that will last longer than a typical centrifugal machine. You’ll still want to drink it as soon as possible, but the nutrients will still be there the next day if kept refrigerated.
The Original Healthy Juicer (Lexen GP27)

What is it Made Of? – Although most of the parts are plastic, it does have stainless steel inserts on the end cap and tip of the auger to make it more durable and long-lasting.
(3.8 / 5) Stability – It has both a suction cup base and a steel clamp to assure a safe, secure grip to any counter top or table.
Ease of Cleaning – Cleans up easily with very few parts to rinse under warm water – end cap, chamber and auger

As with all of these manual juicers, the auger may clog up if you try to put too much in the chute at once. If this happens, you can try reversing the crank to see if that will dislodge the clog. You may also need to put a small piece of carrot or apple in with the leaves to get all the juice out.

Chef’s Star® Manual Hand Crank Juicer – Single Auger Juice Press
Weight and Size – very light at about a pound; 7 x 7 x 10″
Made of? – Plastic
Stability – Suction base but with no back-up clamp. There were consumer complaints that the suction doesn’t last. This could be bad if you have juice in the bowl and the suction cup base comes loose, causing the unit to knock over the juice container. One solution for this would be to super glue the base to a board and then clamp the board onto counter top or table.
(4.1 / 5)
Ease of Cleaning – all the parts detach and are easy to clean
Any Bowls Included? – yes, there are both juice and pulp bowls included with this juicer and it also has a plastic strainer type cover to put over the juice bowl to catch even more pulp and keep the juice foam free.
Warranty – I actually could not find the warranty information on this product
Summary – To sum up these manual wheatgrass juicers, I would say they all seem to be about the same quality for juicing leafy greens, whereas you might want to consider an electric juicer if you want to make large quantities of juice or would like to juice a variety of produce.
I have not found that there is any one perfect product out there. They all have good and bad points.
If you want to try out wheatgrass juicing but don’t want to spend a lot of money, the inexpensive Chef’s Star® Manual Hand Crank Juicer might be the one to begin with. Just know ahead of time you might want to be prepared to super glue it to maybe a 1/2″ board and clamp it to a counter top.
