Champion Juicer – Could it Be the One and Only True Masticating Juicer?

Champion JuicerWell, that’s what one person had to say in his review of the Champion Juicer on Amazon.  I’m not so sure that’s true, but the point was that he had used this juicer for many years and claimed it was the best masticating juicer he’d ever used.

It’s definitely a workhorse that will last through many years of constant use.  It’s run by a heavy duty General Electric  motor, GE being one of the foremost producers of top appliances and life-changing innovations for generations.

What Kind of Features Will You Find on the Champion?

It has:

  • a 1/3 HP 540 watt GE motor
  • a fairly large feed tube at 1 3/4 inches
  • a blank for making sorbets, baby food and even nut butters
  • a single horizontal cutter that runs at a high speed of 1725 rpms.  This is faster than most masticating juicers.single horizontal cutter

How Easy is it to Use?

Unlike a twin gear juicer, you don’t have to put your weight into pushing down the tamper.  It doesn’t self-feed, and you do have to use some pressure, but not anything that couldn’t be done by a child or an elderly person.  The high speed single cutter has cutting blade teeth on one end of the spinner and an auger on the other.

The food first goes through the cutting end of the blade, grinding it up for processing and compressing it so that the juice goes through the holes in the screen into the pitcher or bowl underneath.  The auger end pushes the pulp out the far end into another bowl, which as with other juicers, you can line with a plastic bag to catch the pulp and deposit it in your compost pile.

What is the Champion Juicer Made of?

Champion Juicer G5-PG710 - BLACK Commerical Heavy Duty JuicerChampion Juicer G5-PG710 – BLACK Commerical Heavy Duty JuicerUnlike the less expensive juicers, this one is made of Dupont nylon , which is like hard plastic but stronger and shouldn’t break or crack if dropped.

It comes in either black or white on Amazon, but if you take into consideration the staining potential of carrots and beets over time, you might want to invest in a black one that would hide the stains. It’s also possible to remove the stains with some bleach, if you’d prefer a white one.

The tempered stainless steel blades should never rust or separate.

Where is it Made?

Unlike most juicers that are made in China, as of this writing Champion is one of only two companies offering juicers made in America and all parts are FDA approved.

(The other company offering American made juicers is Nutrifaster.)

The first Champion Juicer came on the market in 1955, so this company has been around for a long time.

How Much Does it Cost?

As of this writing, it is selling on Amazon for less than $300.

What Kind of Warranty Does it Have?

Although it has a 10 yr. limited manufacturer’s warranty, it only has a 1 yr. warranty on the cutting blade and the screens.  There is a 3 yr. warranty on the motor and a 5 yr. warranty on the juicing parts.

That does seem a bit confusing, but you could always contact the company for clarification on that.  Champion Juicer phone # 866-935-8423

How Large is it?

It’s a heavy duty juicing machine, weighing in at about 20 lbs. so you probably will want to have enough counter space to keep it out all the time if you plan on juicing every day.  Otherwise, it’s pretty heavy to have to take out of a cupboard every day.

cThe dimensions are: 19 x 7.8 x 12 inches

Will it Juice Wheatgrass and Leafy Greens?

For a masticating juicer, the Champion does not do as well as you might expect with wheatgrass and other leafy greens.  There is a wheatgrass attachment but the reviews on that have not been good.  I don’t think I would invest in that.

You can still juice greens, but it is a fairly slow process and you might have to run the pulp through the machine 2 or 3 times.  So if greens and wheatgrass are your main preferences, you might want to try the Tribest Green Star Elite GSE-5000.

How About Assembly and Clean Up?

Assembling this juicer is very simple.  Everything just kind of snaps in place and is easy to remove for cleaning.  There are few parts to clean and should only take a few minutes.  Using a bottle brush helps clean the screens and the teeth on the cutter.

You can not put the vinyl juicer parts in the dishwasher.

Any Negative Aspects?

Like with all the juicers I have been reviewing, there seem to be good and bad products.  Some people report that they are getting a lot of foam from their juicing experience.  Some people actually like the foam, others don’t.  A simple way to remove the foam is to simply pour the juice through the included sieve once you’re done juicing.  Others reported very little foam.

As stated before, it doesn’t do very well with wheatgrass. Other stringy produce such as celery.  It’s best to run celery through at the end so the strands aren’t clogging things up while you add other ingredients.

There were reports of wet pulp and having to run carrot pulp back through the juicer to get more juice.  Others say their pulp is very dry.

I think there are factors involved that may include anything from a manufacturer defect to simply not cleaning the screen completely, which could result in more pulp getting in the juice, which was another complaint.

A Couple of Tips

Don’t put too much produce in at a time – just do continuous processing of the fruit and veggies, to keep it from clogging up.

Before each use, rub a small amount of coconut oil or olive oil on the gear shaft to keep it from sticking to the blades.

The cutter blades are sharp.  Don’t run your fingers across them when cleaning.  Use a brush.

To Summarize

This is a top of the line juicer that I would recommend to anyone wanting to mainly juice fruits and vegetables, along with making sorbets, sherbets or nut butter.

I wouldn’t recommend it to someone wanting to do a lot of wheatgrass juicing or leafy green juicing, although it’s possible to use this juicer for those purposes.  For wheatgrass juicing I would recommend a regular wheatgrass juicer.

I think the price is reasonable for all the extra uses besides just juicing.

Be sure to read the instructions carefully about greasing the gear shaft and cleaning the screens in particular.  I strongly believe that problems occurring with this juicer are either factory defects or user mistakes such as not fitting something together right or over-filling the produce chute or not getting the screen clean enough.

Overall, it’s a well-built, long-lasting juicer that should meet most juicing needs.

Tribest Green Star Elite GSE-5000 – Is it the Best Juicer?

Looking for the Tribest Green Star Elite GSE-5000?

4.3 Stars (4.3 / 5)

Tribest Green Star Elite GSE-5000 Jumbo Twin Gear Juice Extractor

Tribest Greenstar

So you’d like more information on the GSE-5000 Jumbo Twin Gear Juice Extractor.  Okay, you’ve come to the right place.

First of all, since price can be a significant factor when purchasing anything, go over and check out the price of  this juicer at Amazon.  It may seem a little steep, especially if you’re just starting out, but in my opinion this juicer is worth it.

For starters, it has one of the best yields of juice from produce of all the juicers out there.  The pulp that remains after running the fruit and vegetables through is so dry, you could not squeeze an ounce of juice from it.  This means you’re getting the most nutrition you possible could out of every piece of produce.

The main reason for this is the 3 stages of the twin gear technology at work in the Green Star Elite.

What Exactly is the Three Stage Process?

twin gearsYou can actually see by looking at the 2 gears how the 3 stage process works. The steel part of the gears first cut up and crush the produce, then you can see that the next part of the gears are hard plastic and have thicker ridges then the next set of ridges.  The thicker ones will mix the particles of food up before moving on to the last part of the gears – the thinner ridges – where the fruit and veggies are really pressed hard to get every last bit of juice out.  With this twin gear technology you really get the very most out of juicing – the most nutrients, the most juice, the most pulp and the best taste.

What Comes With the GSE-5000?

With this machine you’ll get 2 steel screens – one with fine holes that you would use for most juicing, including vegetables and leafy greens.  The other one has slightly larger holes for juicing fruits that have a bit more juice than vegetables or if you like to have a little pulp in your juice.

You’ll also get 2 blanks – one with no holes except on the ends, which you would use for making bread sticks.  The other is called a homogenizer blank, which has a hole on the under side besides the holes on the end.  This one you would use for making sorbet or nut butter.

A glass pitcher comes with this juicer that fits right under the juice spout and holds a good quantity. There is also a stainless steel strainer that fits right over the pitcher.  This will keep even more pulp and foam out of the juice itself.  But another way to do it is to just use the strainer after getting the juice out by pouring the juice into another container through the strainer.

There’s also a tension adjustment knob on the end of the gear housing that has a spring inside.  It keeps a lot of tension on the pulp as the gears are spitting it out to wring out the most juice and deliver very dry pulp, which would be good to put in your compost pile.

The only thing not included here is a pulp collector.  You’ll need something fairly large to catch all the pulp.  One thing that works great is a plastic container that lettuce or spinach comes in from the grocery store.

Soft Fruit Knob for Green Star Elite (GSE5000) JuicerSoft Fruit Knob for Green Star Elite (GSE5000) JuicerBuy Now at AmazonYou can also get an optional fruit adjusting knob for juicier fruits. The spring in this one has a softer tension so when you’re juicing fruits the juice won’t back up into the chute.

Two food plungers come with it also – a plastic one with a guard so you don’t push it into the gears, and a wooden one with no guard. Although the wooden one doesn’t have a guard, meaning you will end up pressing it against the gears at some point, if the wood does get chewed up by the gears, the little pieces of wood will just go into the pulp container so there are no worries about it getting into your juice. It just depends on your preference as to which plunger you would want to use.

How Easy is it to Assemble?

It’s actually quite easy to put together and take apart.  There are clips on each side of the housing that you will detach to remove the housing.  The gears come out fairly easy, the tension knob unscrews for cleaning, the screens or blanks come out easily.

The most important thing to remember when re-assembling the Elite is that the gears have to be inserted in a specific way.  If you look at the ends of each gear, one has one dot and the other has 2 dots. They have to fit together properly – the one dot must go in between the 2 dots when side by side.  You can’t jam them in just any ole way or it won’t work and you can ruin the gears.

Is it Easy to Clean?

Not particularly.  This is probably one of the most time consuming juicers to clean.  Yet it’s important to do it right away, as with any juicer, to keep the screen from getting clogged and to keep from getting dried particles stuck all over the inside.

At least with this juicer, it isn’t so crucial that you drink the juice right away, as the nutrients will still be good for up to 3 days.  Of course you’ll want to drink it as soon as possible to get the maximum benefits, but it’s very important to turn your focus on the clean-up immediately after finishing your juice making.

There is a brush that comes with the juicer to help with the clean-up process.  It’s very handy to get down into the parts that are hard to get to.  Most of the parts are pretty easy to rinse and clean.  The most difficult to clean is the screen.  That’s what you’ll spend the most time on scrubbing with the brush and making sure to get all the particles out of the cracks and crevices.  This is very important to keep the screens from clogging up since the holes are so tiny.

Like I said, this is the most difficult part of using this machine, but for the yield and great taste you get, it’s well worth it.  Just plan for a little extra clean-up time.

You can find a few more tips on cleaning any juicer right here.

Is This Green Star Elite Good For Juicing Greens?

Yes, that’s really what it’s all about.  It does its best work on leafy greens such as kale and Swiss Chard, which it literally grabs and runs through on its own.

It also does great with carrots, but you do need to use some force with them.  Unlike the centrifugal juicers that don’t take much pressure to send carrots through the chute, with this one you’ll need to put quite a bit of pressure on the plunger while the gears are grinding the carrot up.  Because of this, it may not be the best juicer for someone with arthritis or very little strength in their arms.  If that’s the case you might want to look into getting a centrifugal or regular masticating juicer.

How is it With Wheatgrass?

If you only want to juice wheatgrass, this might not be the best juice machine for your purposes.  You might want to check out the specific wheatgrass juicers.

You can use this juicer just for wheatgrass, but what you’ll want to do is put a few drops of flax oil on the gears before juicing wheatgrass to cut down on the foam.  You’ll also want to remove the tension knob completely.

However, if you’re just adding wheatgrass in with your other fruits and vegetables, that will work just fine.  You’ll want to alternate your produce to get the most juice.  Maybe put in some wheatgrass, then a carrot, celery, some chard, an apple and a cucumber.  Once you’ve done that, start over again with the wheatgrass, carrot, celery, etc.  Don’t just take a bunch of one type of food and run them through, then go on to another type and run them through.  They all have different amounts of juice, different textures and by alternating soft with hard foods, you’ll get a better quantity of juice as well as quality.

What Kind of Warranty is on This Product?

Several years ago, this Tribest Juice Extractor had a 5 yr. warranty on it.  At this time it now has a 12 yr. warranty, which is at this time the best warranty on any juicer.  Tribest is so sure of the longevity of the Elite that it will back it for that many years, fully realizing that owners of this machine will most likely be using it nearly every day.  That says quite a lot for this Green Star.

Also, if you need to replace any parts, you can find them here.

How Quiet is it?

The GSE5000 is one of the quietest juicing machines on the market.  The gears make a little noise as they rotate, but that’s normal.

How Big is it?

It weighs about 18 lbs. and measures 18-1/4″x7″x12-1/2″.  When sitting on the counter, it does take up a little more room horizontally so you’ll want to be sure you have counter space.  If you’re planning on using it every day, it will be much more convenient if you can leave it sitting out on the counter.

I can only say that this really is a great juicer for anyone serious about juicing for a healthier lifestyle.  It does best with leafy greens and vegetables, which have fewer calories than most fruits.  I personally have not used this juicer, but am definitely planning on getting one in the near future.

It’s quiet, it’s multi-functional, having the ability to create sorbets, nut butter and bread sticks, and it gets the highest possible yield of juice out of the produce.

The only real down side is the amount of clean-up and the fact that the chute is pretty narrow so you do have to slice cucumbers and apples to fit.

It has a great warranty, so your purchase of a little over $500 will last for many years of juicing.

Super Angel Twin Gear Juicer Review – Is it the Best Juicer?

Super Angel All Stainless Steel Twin Gear Juicer- 5500The most efficient way to get the very most juice and therefore the most nutrients, minerals, enzymes, vitamins, etc. from your juicing experience is to use the twin gear juicing technology.  That is what the Super Angel Stainless Steel Twin Gear Juicer is all about and why it’s one of the best juicers on the market.

4.5 Stars (4.5 / 5)

How Does This Twin Gear Technology Work?

The twin gears in this unit rotate at 82 rpm with 3HP of grinding force, crushing cellulose fibers  in order to get the very most nutritional value out of every piece of produce.  These 2 gears are totally stainless steel, interlocking to get the perfect crushing ability, along with being FDA approved for high quality.twin gears

The fruit and vegetables go through a 3 step process to crush and filter out the most juice possible.

The low rpms, which are the lowest of all the twin gear juicers, keeps the juice at the most minimal oxidation possible, therefore keeping intact the nutritional qualities.

These gears are made of high quality antibacterial stainless steel SUS-304(18-8).
This means there are no plastic parts that might snap off during use.

The cellulose fibers within fruits and vegetables contain much of the nutrients and enzymes we expect to get from juicing.  The 3HP twin gears slowly yet powerfully crush those fibers to a pulp, extracting the most nutrients and juice of any juicer.

Normally it’s a good idea to use only organic fruit and vegetables for juicing or eating, but this twin gear juicer will actually keep most of the chemicals and heavy metals, possibly up to 90%, out of your juice through the process of crushing the produce, sending the juice to one container and the pulp to another.  The chemicals are in the outer peeling and the pulp of produce and as the juice is squeezed and sent through the fine filtering system, the pulp with its chemicals gets left behind.  It can then be easily disposed of.  If it’s organic produce, the pulp can be used in salads, muffins or as compost.

Is This Juicer As Loud As Others?

Because of the unique cooling system within this juicer, there is less strain on the motor, allowing it to run fairly quietly.  Of course anything with a motor is going to make some noise.  It just can’t be helped, but at least it will be quiet enough to run in the morning as with the Cuisinart CJE if you’re an early riser,  and others are still sleeping, depending of course on how light a sleeper they are.

Can it Juice Wheatgrass and Other Leafy Greens?

Yes, most definitely. Wheatgrass is full of nutrients and will juice well in the Angel juicing machine.  It can juice nearly anything, including pine needles.  Pine needles have a lot of nutrition in them, but juicing them is probably not the easiest way to access those good qualities. It takes a lot of needles to get a little juice and could put too much unnecessary stress on the juicer.  Instead, you might consider making a pine needle tea.

The Super Angel can also make nut butters, tofu and sorbets from frozen fruit.

Will the Angel Juicer Overheat if Used Too Long in One Sitting?

There is an internal thermostat on this machine that automatically senses when it’s getting too hot and it will shut it down to prevent overheating.  First there will be a beep, then the motor will shut down and the indicator light will start blinking.  The cooling fan will then cool down the system, which could take several minutes during which time the motor will not run.

Once it cools, there will be another beep and the indicator light will light up again without blinking.

The user’s manual suggests resting the juicer for 10 minutes for every half hour of use to further reduce the chance of overheating.

One suggestion with this twin gear juicer that is different from most other juicers is to let the fan run for about 20 minutes after you’re finished juicing to make sure the system is cooled down.  Just leave the main switch on during this time.  This will help prolong the life of the Super Angel juicing machine.

What if the Food Gets Jammed in the Juicer?

Produce can get jammed in nearly every juicer and this one is no different.  However, with the ability to reverse the gears, it’s easy to unclog the jam and continue on.  One way to keep food from getting jammed in the first place is to only put very small portions of fruit or vegetables in the juicer at a time and wait for them to get crushed before putting more in.

If you do need to reverse the motor, it’s necessary to hit the “Stop” button first, then “Reverse”.  Then hit the “Stop” button again before hitting the “Start” button once more.

Is it Difficult To Clean?

This is a fairly easy juicer to clean because there are only about 4 parts that need cleaning.  As usual, if cleaned right away, it is much easier than setting it aside and cleaning up later. Probably the most difficult part is the screen because the holes are so tiny it might not be obvious that some of them might be clogged.  It’s easy to tell if held up to a light.  Any clogging of the holes will reduce the amount of juice coming through the filter so it’s important to keep all of the holes unclogged.

One way to unclog filter holes is to let the filter screen sit in a mixture of 2 parts baking soda to 2 parts water overnight.  This will make it easy to clean with a brush.  Just be sure not to soak the sensor.

How Much Does the Super Angel Cost?

This is definitely one of the higher priced juicers as you can see here, but it’s also one that can be used commercially as in a deli or juice bar.  I’m actually surprised there aren’t more juice bars around such as there are espresso shops on nearly every corner.  Fresh juice is so much better for us than coffee, yet we’ll spend up to $5 or more on one cup of sweetened coffee, hoping that caffeine kick will get us through the day.  If only we could convince people that a cup of freshly made juice is more apt to give them the energy to get through the day plus it’s so much better for us all.

What Kind of Warranty Does it Have?

There is a 10 yr warranty on nearly all of the parts, with a 5 yr. warranty for wear and tear on the extracting screen housing.  And there is no warranty on the pulp or juice collectors, the food pusher, the fuse or the cleaning brush.

What Are Some of the Negative Aspects?

  • You have to cut the produce into small pieces to fit in the chute and so that the twin gears can slowly crush the juice out.  It does take a little longer than a centrifugal juicer, but it’s also much more efficient.  You just have to have patience and set aside the appropriate amount of time.
  • There are no handles on this juicer, so it might be best to leave it sitting in one place if you have the space on the counter.  It ways about 21 lbs. so it’s not too convenient to move around.  It’s about 10.5 inches tall and almost 20 inches long.
  • Trying to juice soft fruit such as pears or grapes can be trying because mushy food tends to clog the holes in the filter, which in turn can cause juice to back up into the feeding chute.  In order to juice these soft fruits, feed only a small portion through the food chute at a time. If the screen still gets clogged, use the “Reverse” button to clear it or you may have to manually clean out the filter screen.  It’s also best to use the food pusher with the silicone o-ring to prevent splashing.

You can also add in something firmer like a carrot in between soft foods to help prevent clogging.

  • When juicing carrots, you can’t put a lot in at a time, nor press too hard on them.  It’s best to slice fatter carrots lengthwise and only put one in at a time until it’s crushed up.  It’s kind of a matter of trial and error with carrots to see what works best.

In summary, whether you’re juicing fruits and vegetables or wheatgrass and leafy greens, this is a great juicer for someone very dedicated to living a healthier lifestyle.  It is expensive and probably not for someone just starting out.  With proper care it should last several years.  And it would be a great investment for anyone starting a small juice bar business.

Kuvings Whole Slow Juicer B6000S Review – the Best Slow Juicer?

Are you ready to upgrade your juicing experience?

Kuvings Whole Slow Juicer B6000SThen the Kuvings Whole Slow Juicer B6000S might be what you’re looking for.  I have to admit, this is a very attractive professional-looking masticating slow juicer that you can get in either silver, red or white.

It’s pretty compact at 9″ x 8.2″ for the circumference and 17.6″ tall.  It should fit on your counter under most overhanging cabinets.  The fact that it weighs about 14 lbs. means you might just want to leave it out on your counter instead of putting it away in a cupboard after each use.  Find out the current price by clicking the button below.

3.8 Stars (3.8 / 5)                                  Buy at AmazonThe Strong Silent Type

The 330 watt powerful yet quiet motor is actually developed and manufactured by Kuvings.  It runs at between 40 and 50 decibels of sound, compared to some of the high speed juicers that run at 80 to 95 db.

Just a little trivia about decibels – a normal conversation is rated at about 60db, while a lawnmower runs at about 90db.  And if you listen to something over 85db for a prolonged length of time without ear protection, you can actually lose some of your hearing gradually over time.  So, this slow juicer is quieter than a normal conversation – probably one of the quietest juicers on the market.

What is JMCS?

Kuvings has a patent in 50 countries on what is called the Juicer Module Comprising System (J.M.C.S.).  This is a slow squeezing technology which produces nearly twice the amount of juice a traditional faster juicer would produce. In squeezing the fruit and vegetables slowly and being able to put nearly all whole fruits and vegetables in the 3 inch wide chute, you will get a pure nutrient filled juice that has not been damaged by the heat and oxidation that centrifugal juicers can create.

What is it Made Of?

All parts on this whole slow juicer that come into contact with the ingredients or juice are free of BPA, which stands for bisphenol A.    This is a chemical that has been used in plastics and resins since the 1960s.  It’s used in some storage plastics, such as water bottles and food storage such as canned foods.

The worry is that some of the chemical can seep out into the water or food from the container and may cause ill effects on the brain, prostate and behavior of infants and small children and even fetuses.

Being free of this chemical is, of course, a benefit of using this juicing machine.  In fact, all the parts that come into contact with the food or juice are made of either TritanTM or Ultem plastic.   They are both environmentally friendly, strong plastics, safe for children as well as adults.

The strong Ultem screw is longer than in other masticating juicers.  It’s also uniquely designed to squeeze the produce at optimal angles with great force.  That, along with the powerful motor that is the equivalent of 3HP, means the fruit and vegetables will get the ultimate squeezing experience to extract every drop of juice available.

What About Cleaning?

Cleaning this juicer is easy. The parts are easily removed to wash by hand, which is preferable to putting them in the dishwasher.  It’s thought that the heat from the dishwasher could wear the parts prematurely.

Between juicing cycles, such as if you were going to juice fruit and then vegetables in the same session, but apart from each other, you can just pour water through the juicer between those cycles and it will self-clean.  As with all juicers, though, you’ll want to disassemble after your juicing session and hand wash right away to avoid dried on produce and stains.

There are also 2 cleaning brushes included with the juicer, one that fits over the strainer and you can kind of rotate it back and forth to brush off the food particles on the outside of the screen.  Then there’s another brush to clean inside the screen.

Is it Safe?

The two-step safety feature prevents any accidental running of the juicer because not only do the parts all have to be assembled properly, but the locking lever has to be in place before the machine will run.  If you have little kids that could reach the juicer on the counter, just be sure it’s unplugged, the parts are not tightly in place and the locking lever is not in place and you will have no worries that someone might turn it on and be injured in some way.

There is also a safety overload switch to keep it from becoming overheated.

Will Leafy Greens Clog Up the Juicer?

This juicer is great for juicing leafy greens and wheatgrass.  However, when juicing vegetables such as celery, the strings could cause some clogging, so to fix that, just cut the celery into smaller pieces instead of trying to juice the entire stalk.  With other greens, try alternating between fruit and other firmer vegetables to get the most juice and keep from clogging.

Also, don’t try to cram too many apples or mangos or other fruit with peels into the chute at once or it may jam up.

What Kind of Warranty is There?

Kuvings prides itself in good customer service and offers a 10 yr. warranty on the whole juicer if anything happens to it that is not caused by user carelessness or accidental dropping, etc.  However, I did see that a few users were not happy with the customer service they received when they called in about problems they were having with their machines.  Amazon, on the other hand, does have excellent customer service and will honor any warranty without any problems.  That’s why I, myself, prefer to purchase all my online products through Amazon.

Any Negative Aspects?

As happens with most masticating juicers, some pulp does get into the juice during the process.  If you’re in a hurry and you don’t want pulp in your juice, this could be a problem.  But if you have the time, just run the juice through a strainer to get out the rest of the pulp.  The pulp is actually good for you because of the fiber, but not everyone likes pulpy juice.

There were some complaints from consumers that pieces of plastic were breaking off during the juicing process.  I’m not sure what would cause this.  If it was just one complaint, I would think it was a defective machine.  But when you read that it has happened to several users, it can be a concern.

What Causes So Much Pulp to Get Into the Juice?

The baskets in masticating juicers actually have two screens – a fine screen at the bottom where most of the juice comes through and then a screen above that with slightly larger holes.

If you try to put too much produce into the chute at a time, the pulp will get backed up in the strainer basket, causing some of it to leak out through the top screen because the holes are large enough for pulp to come through.

The best way to minimize the pulp in the juice is to listen to the juicer and let it process each ingredient before adding another.  It’s inevitable that some pulp will get into the juice because of the squeezing process.

Some pulp you might not mind drinking, such as with oranges.  But some pulp, such as beet pulp, may irritate your throat, so you would want to simply run any juice with beets in it through a strainer after you’re done juicing.

What Else Can This Slow Juicer Do?

This juicer comes with a solid basket that you can use to make sorbet with, rather than the filter screen basket.  You just want to take some frozen fruit, maybe let it thaw a little and put it through the chute.  There’s a recipe book that comes with the juicer that has some good sorbet recipes in it.

In Summary:

My decision is that if you have a few hundred dollars to spend on a juicer, then it would be worth the investment. The Kuvings Whole Slow Juicer B6000S

  • is a quiet machine
  • will juice most produce without having to cut it up
  • is easy to clean
  • makes sorbet
  • squeezes at a slow speed in order to produce the best tasting, most nutritional juice.

However, on the other hand, if you’re worried about running into the problems some of the consumers have mentioned, such as too much pulp or pieces of plastic breaking off, then I would say go with a less expensive machine such as the Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Masticating Juicer that will do much the same with less risk to your budget.

Hurom Premium Masticating Slow Juicer and Smoothie Maker Review

Hurom slow juicerA Juicer That Makes Smoothies As Well?

The Hurom Premium Masticating Slow Juicer and Smoothie Maker, the HH Elite series is a little different from a regular masticating juicer.  This slow juicer design is fairly new and therefore a little more expensive.

4 Stars (4 / 5)

What’s the Difference?

The main difference between a slow masticating juicer and a regular masticating juicer is that on the slow juicer, the auger sits vertically in the unit, whereas in the other version, it sits horizontally, extending the juice and pulp outlets out to the side.  This takes up more space lengthwise on your counter.

The design of the slow juicer makes it more compact at less than 10″ wide and about 15.7″ high, thus taking up less room on your counter.

It weighs a little over 14 lbs., so is a hefty, well built machine.

As the name implies, this is a slow juicer, working at 80 rpms, using 110v and 150 watts of energy. It slowly and gently squeezes juice out to protect the natural nutrients, flavor and color.

It works similarly to a citrus juicer where you turn the fruit by hand over a stationary auger, only this auger is moving and you simply drop the fruit into the chute and as the auger turns and you press down on the food pusher, the juice is extracted.

Because it slowly squeezes out the juice, it runs very quietly, allowing you to use it without disturbing anyone else in the household.

Will It Take Whole Fruits and Vegetables?

The chute is narrower than on centrifugal juicers, so although you do use whole fruits and veggies, you’ll need to cut up most of them into small pieces, especially potentially stringy foods such as celery.  So you are still using all parts of the produce, just cut into pieces.  It also seems to work best to cut carrots in half lengthwise.

There is actually a benefit to having to cut the food into pieces.  This way, you might be more apt to make sure everything is well-washed and you’ll notice any wilted leaves that you might want to throw away.

And one of the benefits to using whole fruits is that you are protecting the anthocyanin, which is found in such places as the skin of grapes.

What Is Anthocyanin?

It is a strong antioxidant, in fact possibly one of the strongest.  Responsible for the red, blue and purple coloration of some flowers and plants, it’s a pigment of nature that, when ingested, helps our bodies to be healthier and protect us from such things as cancer.  Some plants that have anthocyanin are grapes, especially their skin, plums, red cabbage, most berries, especially blackberries, purple asparagus and more.

However, when cooked, the anthocyanin in produce tends to be easily altered, so that’s why it’s so good to be able to drink it in its fresh state through juicing these fruits and veggies.

Check out these 9 Health Benefits of Anthocyanin

What Exactly Can Be Done With This Juicer?

    • You can make baby food and purees
    • You can juice bananas and avocados, which don’t actually have juice that can be extracted by a centrifugal juicer
    • With the two different filters/strainers you can choose between fine or coarse.  The coarse will allow for a slightly thicker juice
    • With the pulp control lever, you can determine how much pulp you want, if any, in your juice, allowing you to make smoothies and blended drinks as well
    • You can juice leafy greens, such as kale and spinach
    • You can make nut milk

How To Prevent Clogging and Other Problems

Reading through the reviews about the Hurom Premium Masticating Slow Juicer and Smoothie Maker, the most prevalent complaint was that the pulp ejector clogs up, especially when juicing celery or beets or anything stringy.

A possible solution to that involves time and patience.  As mentioned previously, you will need to cut the celery into small pieces, as small as one inch, as well as beets.

Also, you’ll want to process the food through this juicer slower and not force the produce with the food plunger.  This does take time, so it’s something to consider if you want something that is quick and easy.

Although for the most part, the pulp comes out very dry, some reviewers said they had to run it through a strainer or through the machine a second time to get all the juice out.

Also, if you put too many ingredients into the feeder chute at once, the auger may stop rotating due to being overwhelmed with produce.  Turn it off and then run it in reverse for a few seconds.

Stop and start it in the normal position again.  This should unclog it and then wait until all the produce has been processed before adding more.

What Kind of Warranty is On This Juicer?

The motor has a 10-year warranty and 2 years warranty for the other parts.

What Comes With The Hurom Slow Juicer?

  • 2 filters/strainers – fine and coarse
  • 2 containers – one for juice and one for pulp
  • cleaning brush
  • Juice outlet cap to prevent spillage – leave it on while juicing, then simply take cap off to pour into glass
  • Hopper lid to keep dust and debris out while not in use
  • Heavy-duty Ultem® strainer and auger, with 8 times the strength of other plastics, able to handle both soft and hard foods
  • Pulp control switch and Reverse switch

Is It Easy To Clean Up?

Clean-up is fairly easy using the included brush.  It has a brush on one end for the strainer baskets and a kind of pick on the other end for getting into tight spots.  Just be sure to wash everything out immediately after juicing, as with all the other juicers in order to keep particles from sticking and to prevent discoloration.

It’s not a good idea to sterilize the components in high temperatures because it can cause breakdown of the parts, but an alternative way to disinfect naturally is to soak the parts in a solution of baking soda and vinegar.

There’s also a spinning brush that fits over the outside of the filter/strainer that keeps the area between the filter basket and the chamber clean while mixing the produce.

Can You Make Smoothies With Frozen Fruits?

Yes, you can put frozen fruits in this juicer, such as frozen bananas.

However, for most juicers it’s best to use a blender for frozen produce – make some fresh juice and add with the frozen fruit in the blender to make a great tasting smoothie.

What Else Is There To Know?

This masticating juicer is 100% BPA free
    Made in Korea

Among masticating juicers, this Hurom is quiet, doesn’t take up much room on your counter and it does have the ability to make smoothies as well as juice.  It takes a bit more time and patience to work with and is fairly expensive, but if you want a juicer that does it all, this might be the one for you.

However, if you’re just wanting a juicer and already have a blender to make smoothies with, you might want to check out a less expensive juicing machine such as the Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Masticating Juicer   or the Jack Lalanne PJP Power Juicer Pro centrifugal juicer

Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Juicer Review

Here’s Why You Should Consider the Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Masticating Juicer:

Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Juicer4.6 Stars (4.6 / 5)

First of all, 1866 people can’t be wrong, can they?  That’s the number of juicing advocates out there that have given the Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Juicer a 5-star rating on Amazon as of this post.  That’s out of 2423 ratings altogether.  Not bad.

There are a lot of reasons why people like this top of the line well-built juicer.  For people starting out with a centrifugal juicing machine, this is the next step up.  Let’s say you’ve been juicing the centrifugal way for awhile now and are feeling much better than before you started juicing.  But you’ve tried putting leafy greens in your centrifugal machine and you just aren’t getting the amount of juice you know you should be getting and wanting.

You’re sure you want to keep up this healthy lifestyle, as it seems to be helping you lose weight, and you know you’re getting a lot more nutrition than you were before.

So, you want to try a masticating juicer.  This type of juicer will give you even more nutritional value from the produce you use because you don’t have to worry about the heat that the centrifugal juicer generates.

Instead of being spun through a spinning blade, the fruits and vegetables that go into the masticating machine get squeezed by an auger made of very strong Ultem plastic   (8 times stronger than other plastics)  at a very slow speed of 80 rpms.

This process squeezes out more juice, leaving a very dry pulp that is deposited in a separate pulp bin.  The fact that there is no (or a very minimal) amount of heat involved means that oxidation is delayed for a couple of days rather than a few minutes as with the centrifugal machines.

So What Exactly is Oxidation?

It’s my understanding that the heat that occurs from the friction caused by a centrifugal juicer whose blade is spinning at high rpms will cause rapid breakdown of the natural anti-oxidants found in food.

This leads to oxidation, which is a destructive process that robs the food of its nutritional value.

Because a masticating juicer merely squeezes the juice out, there is no heat involved, so the enzymes and other nutritional benefits you get from the juice will remain intact for a longer period of time.  However, the sooner you drink it, the better, as eventually the oxygen in the air will break down the chemical makeup of the juice causing oxidation and loss of nutrients.

Is It Easy To Clean?

Yes, if done so immediately after use.  As with any juicer, the longer the residue is left on the juicer before cleaning, the more difficult it will be to clean.

What Features Does it Have That Might Enhance User Experience?

  • Can be used as a food processor to chop and mince such things as nuts, garlic, ginger roots and more
  • Has a strong 2HP motor
  • Reverse button in case it clogs – just reverse a few times and it should un-clog
  • Has the ability to grind coffee beans and flour
  • Has an extra filter mesh for straining out more pulp after juicing if it still isn’t quite as smooth as you’d like
  • Two different screens – one for juices and one for mincing, grinding and homogenizing
  • Two stage juicing system to get as much juice out of the pulp as possible, leaving a very dry pulp
  • It’s quiet enough to talk over as it works
  • Automatic pulp ejection system – watch the pulp come out into one container as the juice pours into another
  • Four feet for stabilizing as opposed to the body just sitting on the counter as others do
  • 110 volts, 150 watts

What is a Two-Stage Juicing System?

This means that during the first phase, the produce is being squeezed by an auger against a mesh screen, extracting juice.  But before the pulp actually comes out into the container, it is squeezed again against another screen and more juice is extracted.  This ends up giving you the most possible juice and producing a very dry pulp.

How Much Space Does it Take Up?

The masticating juicers are longer than the centrifugal so it will take up a bit more space horizontally.  The dimensions are 6.5″ x 14.5″ x 15.5″ tall from the counter to the top of the food chute. It weighs about 20 lbs. according to the manufacturer, so you might not want to have to lift it out of a cupboard every day if you have a place on the counter to leave it.

How Does it Do With Leafy Greens?

Fantastic.  That’s what these machines are really good at.  Leafy greens, such as kale, are filled with antioxidants to fight against certain types of cancer.  Kale also has iron and vitamin K, which could help patients with Alzheimer’s.  You’ll still want to fold up the greens into something like a ball to make it easier to process, but it will even get juice out of wheatgrass.

One warning about wheatgrass – Wheatgrass is a natural anti-oxidant, but can make you nauseous if you’re not used to it, so start out slow – a small amount added in with something like carrot juice to make it taste better.

When juicing wheatgrass, don’t over fill the chute – just use small amounts at a time – allow most of the juice to be extracted before putting more in the chute.

It will also juice spinach, cabbage and even pine needles, which are high in vitamin C, but might be better used in tea.

Does it Take a Longer Time to Process Than a Centrifugal Juicer?

Although you would think it would take longer because it squeezes instead of spins, there really isn’t much difference time-wise.  It might take a few seconds longer, but nothing significant.

It does work at 80 rpms, compared to the low speed of 6500 rpms of the Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite.   That’s quite a difference and is the reason why the enzymes are protected and no foam is generated and also why oxidation doesn’t occur so quickly.

What Kind of Warranty Does the Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Juicer Have?

There is a 15 yr. manufacturer warranty on this juicer for the repair or replacement of original parts that are defective from the factory.

What Are Some Negative Factors About This Juicing Machine?

  • Narrow-throated chute – At 1 1/4 ” wide, you will have to cut some fruits and vegetables into smaller pieces to process
  • Needs a little more muscle power – some produce you may find yourself having to push harder down the chute because it is being squeezed as opposed to being sliced up with the sharp blades of the centrifugal juicers
  • There were some reviewer complaints about scratches on the auger and screen, but it seems to be from faulty machines or improper seating of the parts
  • Takes up a little more horizontal space on the counter top

Some Tips For Getting the Most Out of Your Omega Juicer

  • Never run it for more than 30 minutes at a time so it doesn’t overheat or get clogged up
  • If you are juicing both soft and harder produce, start with the softer ones at low speed, then put in firmer ones at the higher speed
  • Always let it run for a few seconds after the last piece of food is processed to get the last few drops of juice
  • If you add something small, such as ginger, to enhance the taste, you’ll get the best results if you add it during the first half of the juicing process
  • If you’re mostly doing green drinks, but need a little sweetness, try adding a carrot or beet
  • When grinding up coffee beans, let greasy beans sit out overnight on a paper towel first to eliminate some of the grease.  Then slowly add them to the machine to get a finely ground coffee

Is it Possible To Actually Make Pasta With This Machine?

It’s not advised to make the actual pasta dough with this machine, but you can certainly make noodles, linguini, and even bread sticks with the pasta dough you already have on hand.  Some reviewers stated that they just got a messy goo when they tried this, so here are some tips to hopefully prevent that:

  • Use a small amount of flour in the holding dish and sprinkled on the pasta as it comes out of the nozzle
  • Make the dough into a ball or tube before placing in the chute
  • Place it immediately in boiling water after you get the amount of noodles you want
  • You can also add spinach or basil or other ingredients to the dough to create a flavorful pasta

How About Making Nut Butter or Almond Milk?

Yes to both of these. When making nut butter, which this machine excels at, be sure to remove the shells and/or skins from all the nuts and you may need to add additional oil to the nuts after processing.

To make almond milk, you will want to soak a cup of almonds in water overnight.  The next day, put the cup of almonds in the juicer along with 3 cups of fresh water and run them through using the juicing attachment.

Then, run the pulp along with the juice through the machine a second time.  If you want it really creamy, you can run it through again, but otherwise, when you’re done, just drain the milk through a cloth to get the fine particles out or just drink as is, depending on your taste preference.

To Summarize:

The Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Juicer is a high quality heavy duty masticating juicer with the capability of being used to process foods other than just fruits and vegetables.  It’s a little more expensive than other juicers, such as the Jack LaLanne PJP Power Juicer Pro but you can do a lot more with it.  So if you want to kick your juicing experience up a notch, I would recommend this juicer as a possible step up.
